Current and Upcoming Initiatives

Below is a list of current and upcoming initiatives for the 2023 – 24 school year. Check back often as additional information and new initiatives are added. Your Voice Matters @ APS Survey

  • The Your Voice Matters @ APS survey, which is conducted jointly by APS and the Arlington Partnership for Children, Youth and Families (APCYF), provides insights on topics that include safety (school and community climate), health and well-being, voice, and engagement.
  • The survey window February 20, 2024 – April 5, 2024. The original deadline was March 22, however, the survey deadline is now extended to Fri, April 5.

Revisions to School Board Policy B-2.1 Boundaries

  • APS is currently in the process of revising School Board Policy B-2.1 Boundaries, which governs the process the school division uses when changing school attendance boundaries for existing schools and to determine the school attendance boundaries for new schools.
  • The policy and PIP (Policy Implementation Procedure) are available for public comment until Friday, March 29, 2024.

Arlington Career Center Naming Process

  • The School Board has initiated a naming process for the new Arlington Career Center (ACC) building while construction on the new building is underway.
  • The committee’s charge is to either reaffirm the current name or propose a new name for the building.
  • This is not a process to rename any of the programs within ACC.

Fiscal Year 2025 Budget Development Process

  • The School Board will approve the Fiscal Year (FY) 2025 Budget on May 9, 2024.
  • The community is able to provide feedback on the proposed budget and submit questions online.

Development of the 2024-25 & 2025-26 School Year Calendars

  • APS is currently in the process of developing the school year calendar for the 2024-25 and 2025-26 school years.
  • The school year calendars will adhere to the parameters in School Board Policy I-4.30 School Year Calendar that was adopted on September 7, 2023.
  • The Superintendent’s Proposed 2024-25 & 2025-26 School Year Calendars will be available for the community to review on BoardDocs on Tuesday, November 21, 2023.

Development of the FY 2025-34 Capital Improvement Plan

  • Every two years, the School Board adopts a Capital Improvement Plan (CIP) that addresses APS capital needs—investments needed to improve or enhance the infrastructure of our schools—over the next ten years.
  • The CIP includes major capital projects, such as new schools and school additions, as well as major maintenance and minor construction projects.
  • The FY 2025-34 CIP Direction focuses on funding ongoing capital projects (Synthetic Turf Field Replacements, Kitchen & Security Vestibule Renovations, and the Arlington Career Center Campus Project) and the incorporation of new capital projects (Feasibility Studies and Future Phases of the Arlington Career Center Campus).

The Facility Condition Assessment (FCA) Report

  • The Facilities Condition Assessment (FCA) Report uses the framework and guidelines developed jointly by APS Facilities & Operations staff and the Advisory Council on School Facilities and Capital Programs (FAC). This project is an undertaking of a system-wide evaluation to study the 41 APS facilities.
  • In the FY 2025-34 Capital Improvement Plan (CIP) Direction, which will be presented for information at the School Board Meeting on Nov. 9, 2023, the School Board will direct staff on which methodologies should be used to determine the list of prioritized schools that will have in-depth feasibility studies conducted and considered for major renovations and/or reconstruction.

Development of the 2024-30 Strategic Plan

  • In the Fall of 2023, Arlington Public Schools will begin work to develop the 2024-30 APS Strategic Plan. This process will carry through the 2023-24 school year and include multiple opportunities for community input and feedback.
  • The Strategic Plan serves as a roadmap to guide and focus our work as a school division to provide high-quality educational opportunities that support the academic and social-emotional needs of all students.

2023 Virginia School Survey of Climate and Working Conditions

  • The Virginia School Survey of Climate and Working Conditions is administered to schools through a partnership between the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) and the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE).
  • The purpose of the survey is to provide schools with information on school climate, safety, and working conditions in order to maintain a safe and orderly school environment conducive to learning.
  • The survey measures student and teacher/staff perceptions of school rules and discipline, teacher-student relationships, student engagement in school, and the extent of bullying and teasing at school.

Arlington Career Center Project

  • The Building Level Planning Committee (BLPC) for the Arlington Career Center Project has been reconvened to provide public feedback on the Public Facilities Review Committee (PFRC) Principles of Civic Design.
  • The School Board approved the Schematic Design for the Arlington Career Center Project at the School Board Meeting on October 27, 2022.

School Board Policies Under Review

Information on Expiring Procurement Contracts

  • APS will share information on the contracts expiring soon on a quarterly basis.
  • The goal of sharing this information is to establish an open and accessible channel of communication that allows the community to better understand the contracts and agreements that drive the operations of APS.
  • APS advertises all contract solicitations on eVA and on the APS Procurement Office website.
